While Hiwa-i-te-rangi invites us to dream, Te Aorerekura implores us to action.
Just as Hiwa-i-te-rangi, a Matariki star, holds our dreams and desires in the hope they will be realised, Te Aorerekura, Aotearoa/New Zealand’s first National Strategy for the Elimination of Family Violence and Sexual Violence holds that space where our dreams and desires, indeed, our expectations, may be realised for better, more effective, and just, family and sexual violence prevention and response systems.
Our conference whakatauki Waiho rā kia tū takitahi ana ngā whetū o te rangi, reminds us however of the importance of stepping up as leaders in the space. The realisation of our aspirations, and those of our communities, requires that we each work as leaders in our mahi, alongside other leaders (in government, in culture, in communities) to realise Te Aorerekura’s Moemoea that “All people in Aotearoa New Zealand are thriving; their wellbeing is enhanced and sustained because they are safe and supported to live their lives free from family violence and sexual violence”.
Te Kupenga Whakaoti Mahi Patunga/National Network of Family Violence Services, as organisers of the 2023 National Conference of Family Violence, invites expressions of interest from individuals and organisations wishing to present at the conference. Expressions of interest are for places within sessions being run concurrently during the conference. Depending on the number of successful expressions of interest, presenters will have between 20-60 minutes to present.
- Is Te Aorerekura missing a fundamental shift – does it repeat the problems of the existing systems in making invisible, people who use violence/perpetrators?
- Kaupapa Māori research and models - insights for preventing and responding to family and sexual violence
- “By Māori, for Maori” and the potential of Tauiwi colonisation of Māori knowledge and practices
- The overlaps of sexual and family violence – what can we learn from each other?
- Family and sexual violence in Rainbow communities
- The overlaps of family violence, sexual violence and “elder abuse”
- Supporting male victims of family and sexual violence
- Workforce frameworks – the tools and missing tools which inform our mahi
- From culturally competent to culturally safe practice – moving away from acquiring skills and knowledge of other cultures and moving towards self-reflection of our own attitudes and biases that may affect the cultural safety of clients.
- Risk assessment and safety planning – what can we learn from overseas efforts to formalise frameworks and processes
- When women use violence – same or different analysis and responses?
- Accessible isn‘t just a mobility ramp – working with clients who have disabilities
- Creating systems that value peer support alongside professional support and interventions
- Te Aorerekura Action Plan review – as the first Action Plan comes to an end, what should the second Action Plan contain?
- Working with clients with co-existing conditions – family and sexual violence interventions where there are existing alcohol and drug dependencies and/or mental health conditions
- Centering the voice and experiences of tamariki and rangatahi/children and youth
- Creative approaches, novel programme delivery methods and innovative prevention campaigns
- Given the experiences of gender-diverse people and communities, is the notion of violence as inherently “gendered” or “sexed” still appropriate?
- How do we know that what we do works – what do we need to move from the anecdote to the research base
- Specialist Organisational Standards and the Entry to Expert Framework – “professionalising” the family violence sector?
- “Compassionate accountability” – a place for people who use violence to take responsibility while working with historic trauma?
Guidelines
Proposed expressions of interest should be no more than 300 words and meet the following requirements:
- Include a brief working title (we accept your title may change in the lead-up to the conference)
- Outline briefly what your presentation will cover and how you will present it (e.g. interactive discussion or training, presentation of research findings)
- Indicate how long you believe your presentation will take (note there is a minimum of 20 minutes/maximum of 60 minutes for presentations)
- Identify whether you would be happy to share a session with another presenter presenting on a related topic or whether you require the whole session slot
- Outline who will be presenting and, if more than one presenter, the names of each presenter
- Include a brief biography for each nominated speaker which includes, at least their name, job title/role and organisation.
- Indicate whether you have any IT requirements (eg., whiteboard, projector and screen for Powerpoint etc)

Expressions of interest must be received by close of business on Friday 2 December2022.
You will receive an acknowledgement of your expression of interest however notice of acceptance will only be sent after the closing date of 2 December 2022. We expect to notify all successful presenters within two weeks of the deadline.
